Android Operating SystemAndroid is an operating system which is owned by Google. It is based on the Linux operating system and is designed for use on touchscreen mobile phones and tablets. The first phone which had the Android operating system installed was available in 2008.

The code for the Android operating system is open source, which gives hardware and app developers the permission to modify the code as needed for their applications. There are nearly one millions apps availalble to be downloaded from Google Play for mobile devices which have Android installed.

The Android operating system is installed on smartphones by Samsung, Sony, HTC and Motorola. At the time of writing, the most up to date version of Android was Jelly Bean, version 4.2.x. Previous versions include Ice Cream Sandwich (version 4.0.x), Honeycomb (3.x), Gingerbread (2.3.x) and Froyo (2.2).

Android is now the most widely used smartphone operating system in the world, and is now being used additionally on devices including:

  • digital cameras
  • televisions, and
  • games consoles
